On 6 April 1987, The Cure released their first single for over a year. Why Can't I Be You? is taken from the band's forthcoming double LP Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and it's backed with a previously unreleased track entitled A Japanese Dream. The 12inch will feature extended and remixed version of both songs.
The original UK 7inch pressing [FICS 25] features Why Can't I Be You? b/w A Japanese Dream as a B-side. A limited edition of the 7inch double pack in a gatefold sleeve [FICSG 25] was issued. It features the same two tracks as the 7inch and live versions of Six Different Ways b/w Push as a bonus, both songs were taken from The Cure In Orange. 10,000 copies were issued, each individually numbered. The original UK 12inch [FICSX 25] pressing features extended and remixed versions of both songs.
Why Can't I Be You? entered the UK charts, where it would peak at number 21.
